Canadian Citizenship Processing Times Explained (2026)
August 28, 2026 · Canadian Citizenship Prep
Current Processing Times
As of 2026, IRCC's published processing time for citizenship applications is approximately 12 months from submission to ceremony. However, actual timelines vary significantly based on several factors.
Stages of Processing
1. Application Submission
After mailing your application (or submitting online), you will receive an Acknowledgement of Receipt (AOR) confirming IRCC has your application.
2. Background and Security Checks
IRCC and partner agencies conduct background checks. This stage is largely outside your control and can take several months.
3. Test Invitation
If everything checks out, you will receive an invitation to take the citizenship test. Test appointments are typically scheduled within a few weeks of the invitation.
4. Test and Interview
You take the test. If there are concerns, you may be called for an interview with a citizenship judge.
5. Ceremony Invitation
After passing the test, you wait for a ceremony invitation. Wait times for ceremonies vary by region.
6. Ceremony and Oath
You attend the ceremony, take the Oath of Citizenship, and receive your certificate.
Factors That Affect Processing Time
